Jomsom is the district headquarters for the
Mustang region of Nepal. To many people however, Mustang implies the area of
Nepal that extends
like a thumb into Tibet. This is the region described in
Michel Piessel's book Mustang, and includes the walled capital city of
Mustang, Lo Mantang. This part of Mustang, however, is on the list of
restricted areas.
The kingdom of Mustang lies in the rain shadow formed by the Annapurna & Nilgiri Himalayas thus gets very little rain which makes the area ideal for trekking even in the mid monsoon while the other areas of Nepal remain unviable for trekking due to heavy monsoon rain.
